Long-time Wacoans will remember when Lake Air Mall was bustling with shoppers on Bosque Boulevard where Target now sits. It was in that mall in 1985 where Kathy Sommerkamp opened her florist business at a kiosk and started by doing weddings for friends. Word about her talent for providing beautiful arrangements for her customers spread, and Kathy’s business quickly outgrew the mall space.
Hewitt Florist, Kathy’s second location, opened as Hewitt and Woodway grew. A few flower shops came and went over the years, but Kathy and her team at Hewitt Florist became the go-to shop for everything from weddings to homecomings to proms and everything in between, especially for people in Hewitt, Woodway, Robinson and Lorena. The growing business moved one more time to its current location at 8664 La Village Ave. just off of Hewitt Drive. But throughout the years, Kathy’s favorite part of her job has always been weddings.
“I love creating something that’s going to make the family proud,” said Kathy. “I feel like when the flowers arrive, the wedding takes on a whole new experience of color and movement.”

The most important thing we do is listen,” said Kathy. “We get the style and colors down, usually by looking through things the bride has saved on Pinterest. Our designers are the best in town, and I’m so proud of the work that we do.”
After 35 years of creating floral designs for Central Texans’ weddings, many brides become part of the family according to Kathy. “We’re now doing weddings for the children of brides we worked with years ago. It’s amazing to have the opportunity to make memories with their families like that.”
