Tresses of dark hair, curled to perfection, flow down the back of a blushing bride as she sees herself in the mirror for the first time. Karen Dungan, owner of Salon Karen in Temple, TX, has just finished styling the bride’s hair, and by the look on the bride’s face, she knows she has another satisfied customer.
Dungan has worked in the industry for more than three decades and five years ago, she left her position at a salon and spa to strike out on her own. With a team of seven stylists, makeup artists and skin experts, she is creating a dedicated client base and creating beautiful looks for people all over Bell County.
“I’ve always enjoyed doing full services—makeup, hair, manicures, pedicures, facials. I’ve been trained in all of these areas, and I’ve worked for Redken as an educator since 1999.”
The salon owner believes the education of her and her team sets the business apart from other salons in the area.
“We’re really big on education,” she said. “All of my employees are Redken specialists, which means they have completed a four-day class
where they become knowledgeable on all Redken products from hair color to your take-home hair care.”
Because Dungan and her team have been educated on the best practices and safest methods for work in the salon, they also only use top-of-the-line products on their clients.
“Our skin care line is a pharmaceutical line, rather than a cosmetic line,” she said. “The ingredients are more stringently checked with the FDA. It’s only sold in dermatology offices and salons that get education with the company.”
The staff at Salon Karen wants each client to feel their best, even when they are going through a difficult time.
“I have volunteered for the American Cancer Society for 29 years, and we encourage people to reach out to us if they are undergoing treatment and need help.”
While the salon treats every customer like family, Dungan and her team also offer brides special deals to make their big day a special one.
“We offer half-price on style trial runs for the bride,” she said. “We don’t ever want to do the wedding [look] the first time the day of the wedding. So, it’s important that we offer trial runs for the bride.”
Not only can the stylists at Salon Karen style create custom hairstyles and makeup looks for brides, but they can also do haircuts, color correction, gel manicures, microdermabrasion and much more.
